After deciding against the idea to use dots as the basis for the visual aesthetic of the show I decided to think more about the theme of Language in design that the brief is based around. After our workshops with regular Practice and using the drawings of the Wellcome collection content I wanted to see how the show could work using things that we use to communicate these being hands, mouths and eyes. Upon starting this project I firstly thought about the previous summer shows put on by visual communication. My first thought was about what the visual aesthetic could be based on and I had the idea to base it on the peg boards that are a recurring furniture item in the summer show and how a simple thing like this could be used to create the visual aesthetic of the show. One of the first workshops as part of Making a Living Week we started out by looking t found objects provided by Tom and Kristoffer we were asked to then draw any glyphs (individual letter or symbol) that we liked, we did this three times then re-drawing and sizing them to cut out of coloured paper. we worked in groups compiling our letters together on A1 sheets to create very dynamic and colourful posters.
We have had another workshop in groups where we have went out in search of images of the area around us from building and spaces, sounds and conversations to illustrations and found objects. After completing this we went to the Bishopsgate Archive to look at some historical documents ranging from books to illustrated pamphlets. The final part of the workshop was to but together a small exhibition of what we had found and what we could find to direct us in the work. Continue reading Workshops: Visual research

Our latest workshop at Futures Past has been in the laser cutting and wood work studios in the bottom floor of the university.
