Each week of our critical Industry Practice class we are assigned a practitioner a week to research, were also asked to give our thoughts on a certain topic and to collect objects or research relating the practitioner.
The first weeks practitioner was Massimo Vignelli who has an interesting way of looking at typovraphy. In his commentary on type Massimo explains that it isn’t the type itself that is impactful but it’s the negative space around the letters. He says that this is the essence of typography, It’s noticeable when learning about typography that it’s not just how the letter is shaped but how it interacts with the space around it. This way of thinking helps to raise questions when reviewing work and seeing if letters invade the space of one another.
