In our first CIP class with Ricardo Everlsley the first thing we were asked to do is to answer 6 questions. The intention for this was to use the answers we came up with to create a logo for our personal identities as designers.
The first question was “What are your viscomm strengths?” we had to come up with 10 answers for this question mine were.
- Photoshop Knowledge
- Screen Printing Experience
- Book Binding Experience
- Letterpress Experience
- Knowledge of how colour effects reaction and behaviour
- Willingness to create
- Decent skill with various mark making materials
- an incredible ability to talk constantly
The second question was “What are your weaknesses?” for this I only had 3 answers
Bad time management, Inability to fall asleep and constant tiredness
“Favourite colour?” this was the easiest question to answer, Black and Grey (very exciting I know)
We also had to name our favourite designers/ illustrators. Some of mine included people working as designers and also people who’s work I enjoy in the class.
- Will howells
- Billy Klofta
- Oliver Roman
- Finn Kidd
These are some of the people in class that I think are exceptionally talented illustrators.
I also added
- Olly Moss
- Malika Favre
- Jack of the Dust (Andy)
- Dino Tonic
- Abram Games
- Naturel to my list.
If you get a chance I recommend viewing the work of all of these artists they are all incredibly good at their chosen craft (A lot can be found on Instagram).
The last question was “What do you want to do” and since I like most others have no idea at all of what I want to do other than make movie posters or book covers I simply put anything illustrative or creative writing.
After finishing our questions we then watched a short video about the design thinking behind the Obama 08 campaign and how they came up with their ideas. The video was basically a run down of the different ideas they tested out and why they did it. They then showed the final result and talked about the change in Obama supporters it caused.
The final part of the workshop was to create some rough designs for logos using the answers to our questions. Since my answer for weaknesses was bad time management I decided to base my logo around that in a way trying to turn a weakness into a strength.
Above is a scanned image of all the ideas I came up with. It started off with trying to an L8 to stand for late but I think that sent out a negative message and since the aim is to self promote not demote I eventually came to the clock design.
